California Alleged Drug Trafficker Indicted in the District of Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City returned an indictment today charging an alleged drug trafficker from California with multiple drug crimes after an interstate stop led to the seizure of fentanyl pills, fentanyl powder, and cocaine in the District of Utah. Daniel Luke Adams, 30, of Lodi, California, was charged by complaint on August 3, 2026. According to court documents, beginning in May 2026, agents began investigating a group known to be facilitating the distribution of controlled substances into Utah. On July 31, 2026, agents with the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force followed a vehicle that was traveling from Stockton, California to Utah. Law enforcement stopped Adams for a traffic violation on I-80 in Tooele, County, Utah. Detectives learned that Adams was traveling with another vehicle allegedly loaded with suspected controlled substances (a load car). A search of the load car revealed 2,272 grams of fentanyl powder, 1,168 grams fentanyl pills, and 916 grams of cocaine. Additionally, detectives obtained video surveillance of Adams retrieving a bag from his car, a Chevy Equinox, and loading it into the load car, a Ford Escape, at a residence in Stockton. The bag appears to be one of the bags found in the load car during the traffic stop in Utah. Adams is charged with possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. His initial appearance on the indictment is scheduled for August 13, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. in courtroom 8.4 before a U.S. Magistrate Court Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City. United States Attorney Melissa Holyoak of the District of Utah made the announcement. The case is being investigated jointly by the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force (UCMC), and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (DHS). Valuable assistance was provided by the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter Reichman for the District of Utah is prosecuting the case.
